Role and contribution


Professor Tuomilehto leads Research Line 4 and takes a major scientific role in workpackages 4.1 and 4.2.



Scientific profile

Professor Tuomilehto has wide experience in clinical epidemiology and genetic epidemiology of diabetes for more than 20 years, including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He also has wide experience also in the coordination of nation-wide studies in Finland and international collaborative studies with several landmark publications. His research group has completed two genome-wide scans to detect genes for type 2 diabetes. They are currently coordinating major type 2 diabetes prevention studies in Finland and Europe. A wide range of genetic and epidemiological research is ongoing in the field of type 2 diabetes, including a community-based prevention program in Finland. In addition, Professor Tuomilehto has considerable experience in gene-lifestyle interaction analyses based on the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study participants that can be considered as a pilot study and is going to be a major strength for the proposed research. He has been involved in several international scientific organizations and served as the Chair of the International Diabetes Epidemiology  Group and the Working Group of Epidemiology and Prevention of the European Society of Cardiology.
