Professor McCarthy leads Research Line 3 of the InterAct project, bringing his expertise in genetics of diabetes. He is responsible for workpackages 3.1 to 3.4 and is a member of the Project Management Group.

Scientific Profile

Prof McCarthy's group and his collaborators at OCDEM represent one of the leading groups in Europe working on clinical and basic science aspects of T2DM and insulin resistance. Their studies based on large-scale linkage and association analyses have contributed to the identification of several T2D susceptibility loci.   He currently leads the International Type 2 diabetes 1q consortium (undertaking large-scale genetic analyses to identify susceptibility genes on chr 1q) and the T2D subgroup within the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (undertaking a large genome wide association study).

As such Prof McCarthy and his group are experienced in the design, implementation and analysis of large-scale genetic epidemiology studies. Prof McCarthy is Chairman designate of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, recent Chair of the Research Committee of Diabetes UK, Associate Editor of Diabetologia, and serves on the Editorial board of Diabetes and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. He has served on several national and international review panels and working parties.
